Curtains for Broward Sun: Which Fabric to Choose Based on Your Windows' Orientation

In Broward, the sun is strong, and it doesn't hit every window the same way. We explain which Ripple Fold fabric (Sheer, Light Filtering, or Blackout) works best depending on whether your windows face east, west, north, or south.

If you live in Broward, you already know: the sun here is not a minor decorative detail. It comes in strong, heats up quickly, and changes in intensity throughout the day. But there's something many people overlook: not every window in your home gets the same sun.

Orientation (which direction each window faces) completely changes which curtain is right for you. A fabric that's perfect for a bedroom with an east-facing window may fall short in a living room that faces west. Let's take it step by step.

First, understand how sunlight enters your home

The general rule is simple, and it applies throughout the Northern Hemisphere:

  • East-facing windows: receive morning sun. It's direct, bright light, but the day's heat hasn't reached its peak yet.
  • West-facing windows: receive afternoon sun. It's usually the most intense light and the one that heats rooms the most, because it arrives when the day has already built up heat.
  • South-facing windows: receive light for much of the day. In summer the sun is very high, so it comes in at a more vertical angle.
  • North-facing windows: receive softer, indirect light, with no direct sun for most of the year.

To find out which way each window faces, simply observe your home at different times of day or use your phone's compass app. With that, you can make a confident decision.

The three Ripple Fold fabrics, one sentence each

Before we go through each orientation, here's a quick overview of what we offer. All three come in custom Ripple Fold curtains, with that clean, wavy drape that looks just as good in a modern home as it does in a condo facing the ocean:

  • Sheer: almost transparent. It lets light through and softens the view outside, but offers little privacy during the day and almost no protection from direct glare.
  • Light Filtering: filters and softens light while maintaining privacy. It's the middle ground: the room stays bright, without the direct hit of the sun.
  • Blackout: blocks light. It's the choice for total darkness or for blocking the most intense sun.

You can see how each one looks in the fabric catalog or request free fabric samples to check them in your home's actual light.

West-facing windows: afternoon sun in Broward

This is the case that causes the most headaches. From mid-afternoon until sunset, the sun comes in almost horizontally, glares in the living room, reflects off the TV screen, and heats the room right when you want to relax.

Which fabric works best:

  • Light Filtering is the most balanced choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens facing west. It reduces glare, softens the light, and keeps privacy without making the space feel like a cave.
  • Blackout makes sense if that window is in a bedroom, a home office where you need to control reflections, or any space where you want to block light completely. In general, a more opaque, thicker fabric does more to keep heat out than a lightweight one.
  • Sheer alone is rarely enough for west-facing windows. Its best role here is as a decorative daytime layer, paired with another fabric, not as the only defense against the afternoon sun.

A practical tip: if your west-facing window is large, think of the curtain as part of your strategy for keeping the home cool, along with your air conditioning and, if you have them, any existing window glass or film. A curtain can help a room feel cooler, but it doesn't replace other solutions.

East-Facing Windows: Morning Light

East-facing sun is bright but gentler. It wakes up the house early, and for many people it's pleasant light in the kitchen or breakfast nook. The problem mostly shows up in bedrooms, where that brightness can cut your sleep short at 6:00 a.m.

Which fabric works best:

  • Blackout in the primary bedroom and children's rooms, if you want to sleep in a dark room or rest after a night shift.
  • Light Filtering in the kitchen, dining room, or living room, so you can enjoy natural morning light without it bothering your eyes.
  • Sheer works very well in east-facing spaces where morning light is welcome and privacy isn't a priority, such as an area overlooking an enclosed patio.

South- and north-facing windows

South-facing windows get light almost all day, so it's worth considering Light Filtering as your base fabric: it softens constant brightness without making the room dark. If the room is for resting, Blackout is still the best option.

North-facing windows have calmer light. Here, Sheer looks great, since it makes the most of that soft light and lets you see outside. If you need privacy from the street or neighbors, step up to Light Filtering.

Quick summary: which fabric for which window

  • West, living room or dining room: Light Filtering.
  • West, bedroom or office with glare: Blackout.
  • East, bedroom: Blackout.
  • East, kitchen or living room: Light Filtering or Sheer, depending on how much privacy you want.
  • South: Light Filtering, or Blackout if it's a resting room.
  • North: Sheer, or Light Filtering if you need more privacy.

And if a single room has windows facing two directions, choose based on when you use that space most during the day.

What a Curtain Can and Can't Do

Let's be clear. Curtains help with the light, privacy, and comfort of your spaces. But they don't protect against hurricanes or replace certified storm protectors. Those solutions are separate, and curtains complement them rather than replace them.

Before you order: measure carefully

A custom Ripple Fold curtain looks its best when the measurements are right. We have a complete measuring guide, and if you'd like someone to review it with you, you can schedule a free video call or a technical visit.

Frequently asked questions

Which fabric is best for afternoon sun in Broward?

For west-facing windows, Light Filtering is usually the most balanced choice for living areas, and Blackout is best if you want to block light completely, for example in a bedroom.

Can a Sheer curtain handle strong sun?

The Sheer fabric lets light through and softens the view, but it isn't designed to block direct sun. It works best on windows with soft light, such as north-facing ones, or as a decorative layer.

Do curtains help keep the house feeling cooler?

They can, especially on windows that get direct sun, because they reduce the light coming in and the warming effect in the room. It's a helpful aid, not a complete solution, and it works best alongside other comfort measures at home.

Can I see the fabrics before buying?

Yes. We offer free fabric samples so you can see how each fabric looks in your own windows' light. You can also request a quote and buy online with our configurator, then install with professional help or do it yourself.
