The technology behind a curtain: how we are building the Drapery Life API

Instant pricing, coverage by ZIP code, and orders that reach the factory without transcription errors. None of that is magic: it's a proprietary platform that we are building piece by piece. Here's how it works and where it's headed.

When you configure a curtain on our website and the price changes as you adjust the width, it seems like a small detail. Behind it is a big decision: at Drapery Life, we don't use a generic online store. We built our own platform, because a custom curtain isn't a catalog product with size S, M, or L. It's a unique combination of measurements, fabric, light level, installation type, and location.

One Brain for the Whole Business

The core idea is simple: a single source of truth. The fabric catalog, factory price lists, service areas, quotes, orders, and each customer relationship live in the same system and speak the same language. When a price changes, it changes everywhere at once. When a customer pays, the order already includes the exact measurements they entered, so no one has to copy them over again.

What You See

  • Real-time pricing as you configure.
  • Zipcode coverage validation.
  • Cart with multiple windows and options.
  • Order tracking.

What You Don't See

  • Pricing rules by measurement range.
  • A CRM that remembers every conversation.
  • Connected payments and financing.
  • Backups before every change.

What an API Is and Why It Matters to Us

An API is, put simply, an orderly door through which two systems can talk. Instead of someone copying data from one screen to another, the systems request and deliver information directly to each other, with clear rules about who can see what.

Our platform is already organized this way internally: the quote tool asks for prices, the checkout confirms payments, and the CRM records every step. The next step is to organize those doors into a stable, documented API that will let us:

  • Connect with our factory and installers so every order arrives complete and verified.
  • Integrate marketing, messaging, and analytics tools without fragile manual processes.
  • Later on, open collaborations with interior designers and builders who need to quote full projects.
  • Serve as the foundation for the artificial intelligence agents we describe in our next article.
A well-made curtain starts with a well-taken measurement. Technology exists so that this measurement never gets lost along the way.

Built with care

Growing fast can't mean neglecting the basics. That's why the platform is built on a few rules we don't compromise on: administrative access protected by two-factor authentication, keys and credentials stored outside the code, backups before every release, and changes tested before they reach customers. Your data is used to serve your order, and for nothing else.

What's next

Over the coming months, you'll notice the results more than the technology: faster responses, clearer quotes, fewer steps to buy, and more tools to visualize your space. We'll keep you posted here, in the Journal, on every major step forward.
